My father was an inventor, he designed aeroplanes and when he died he did'nt leave me a large sum of money but only the conviction that one of the best jobs you can ever do is a creative one. The famous and prolific French architect Philippe Starck is considered one of the major names in contemporary design. Equally appreciated and detested, Starck is renowned for his qualities as a designer, an intelligent and cultured self-educated, poetic creator who was free of conformisms, but guided by an extremely controlled professionalism. The winner of important awards and, at the same time, the object of endless disputes (he is accused of sacrificing the functionality and practicality of objects in the name of their aesthetic), Starck became interested in design from a very young age, designing everything: furniture, boats, motorcycles, clothing, bathrooms, watches, television sets, toothbrushes, bottles of mineral water, eyeglasses, juice-squeezers, new types of pasta, and much, much more. As an architect and interior designer, in the ‘80s he became famous for the creation of furnishings for many halls at the Elysée Palace in Paris and for the restructuring of the Café Costes, but he has also designed hotels, shops, restaurants and buildings all over the world: New York, Tokyo, Sidney, Moscow, …
