History
More than being a true design icon, the “Wassily” is considered the very first chair ever created with steel tube. It bears Breuer’s stylistic signature and is a distinctive hallmark of modern furniture. The steel tube perfectly corresponded with the contemporary aesthetic of the machine, a manifesto of the design ideal of the 1920s. It was a symbol of technology, industry, production in series, standardization, functionality and hygiene, that were all values and concepts of crucial importance for international modernism. The armchair was called “Wassily” because Kandinsky owned the prototype created in 1925, and used it in his house at the Bauhaus campus. Polished chromed or lacquered steel tube frame. Seat, armrests and back upholstery in thick cowhide.
