Flowers and Plants: indispensable décor of your home
"After women, flowers are the most divine creation"
- Christian Dior
We see them everywhere and spend time lusting over their beauty but what benefits can flowers have in the home?
Floristry has seen a complete revamp over the past few years with it becoming more aspirational, especially during the pandemic. This is perhaps due to all the enviously whimsical Instagram posts which fillour feeds with colour and show how we can construct nature into beautifulforms. Floristry as an expression of emotion/art is not a new phenomenon at all and in fact exchanging flowers as a gesture of love/affection was a tradition that we took from harems of Turkey in the 17th/18th Century and brought back as almost a souvenir.
Flowers carry their own language and have always been symbolic of an emotion or occasion.
But what do flowers in the home have to do with our mental health and well-being?
Over time, having plants and flowers in the home or workplace increase productivity and creativity. Plants such as an aloe plant, English Ivy, Peace Lily or a spider plant are thought to have de-stressing properties which everyone could probably do with!
They are relatively low-maintenance and require little attention. You can put your own stance of these plants by using a stone plant pot or something a little bolder like copper or coloured plastic. However, you decide to style them, they should make a space feel more open and really draw the outside in, which coincidentally has become the new big trend of 2022: bring the outside inside, live atriums etc...
Plants and flowers have become an interior staple, perhaps because of their functionality as a mode of self-expression. They are perfect as an ever-changing accessory that can add a different spin to your room on a weekly basis.
So, if you get bored easily, a frequent flower change can be a great option. If you have a neutral space, flowers can jazz it up by adding extravagance or depth/vibrancy of colour.
If you are limited on space then ‘jam jar flowers’ look beautiful and add a rustic, country feel to a space. They also grant you the creative freedom to add different flowers that you have growing in the garden or that you pick up in the park and style them however you wish!
Flowers naturally create a feeling of space and enhance either an opulent look or a wild and natural image.
One of the beautiful things about flowers is that they are accessible to everyone and there are many florists who share inspirational ideas/photos of how to put together bouquets and how to style them.
