History

This chair is generally attributed to Robert Mallet-Stevens, due to the fact that a very similar model appears in pictures of his Villa Cavroix’ kitchen (1932) and in another pictures of a restaurant he designed. It was probably created around 1928, even if – according to other scholars – the intellectual property could not belong to Mallet-Stevens, because it does not correspond to his style and because in his projects, the architect frequently used furnishings that he did not design. This is a chair with a structure in steel tubes and sheet metal. It is simple, linear and practical because it is stackable. This characteristic was probably planned to allow economical serial production. All these arguments support attributing it to Mallet-Stevens, because they coincide with his vision of architecture: a marked propensity to the functionality of the object, the simplicity and basic lines, the design of furnishings for the production in series.
